Teachers, VIP of the Day Print

By Nova Starr S. Lacerna, DCNHS

DU-TER-TE! DU-TER-TE! DU-TER-TE!  The whole gym filled with educators and leaders from different schools were united as they cheered the name of their city mayor.  You could feel goosebumps from the loud excitement of everyone in the gym as the beautiful mestiza woman, who is also the country’s First Daughter of the President, turned heads and, for a moment, stopped the program as she walked towards the stage.
It was October 5, 2017, the World Teachers Day, the culmination of the National Teachers’ Month, where secondary teachers gathered at the Alumni Multipurpose Gym of Davao City National High School, and was graced by the presence of Davao City’s dear Mayor “Inday” Sara Zimmerman Duterte.

The celebration to honor the modern heroes – our teachers – who made significant contribution to the community by moulding the youth – was a festive Cluster Wide party of around 1,000 teachers from Leon Garcia National High School, Sta. Ana National High School, Erico T. Nograles National High School, Dacudao National, Vicenta Nograles, and DCNHS as the host school.
The day started with a parade through the school’s corridors and the grassy field at 8:00 in the morning where teachers were led by their School Heads and their marching bands.
Red was the color of the day, reflecting the teachers’ passion and love for their service and dedication to educating the next generation of leaders.
Wearing their red hot crimson polo shirts as the color for Cluster, and holding their rainbowed balloons, all the teachers, whether or not they were “dancerous creatures”, had stretched, and swayed, and frolicked to the zumba marathon lead by the MAPEH teachers of DCNHS.
After the zumba, the teachers cooled down and cheered to their representatives for the Hugyawan contest, a dance and entertainment competition to showcase creative talents, which the City Mayor had witnessed herself.
Mayor Duterte’s message to the teachers was heartfelt, as she expressed her sincere appreciation and concern for the welfare of the teachers. The mayor declared a better gathering during the next events as she said she would be raising the city’s budget in order to purchase gigantic fans to be installed in the DCNHS gym.
Before the mayor left, she happily took groufies with the teachers.
Other guests were Councilor from 1st District, Dr. Pilar C. Braga, who was the keynote speaker. She relived her memories as a student as her way to thank her teachers into shaping her as the leader she is now.
There were also head doctors from Davao Doctors Hospital and Global Eyecare Center, who sponsored the free Comprehensive Medical Checkup with different specializations.
Teachers were indeed the VIPs of the day as they were pampered by free foot spa and full body massage, while waiting for the night’s occasion: Ganda at Gwapong Guro, Tamsi Edition.  That night was a gala for the brains and body positivity with healthy contestants. The couple from Dacudao NHS emerged as the winners for the night.
DCNHS had dominated the dance floor, during the announcing of winners for the Hugyawan.
Overall, it was a celebration of the World Teacher’s Day that was unique, memorable, and successful – a big bang, with the leadership of Wenefredo E. Cagape, Ed.D, Ph.D., Public Schools District Supervisor of Cluster 1. Teachers can look forward for another fellowship next year.
