Davao City bags 1st athletics gold

JOSHUA Hopano captured Davao City's first gold medal in the 2016 Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet athletics competition as of Tuesday presstime at the Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex.

Hopano, a 15-year-old Grade 9 student at Lower Tamugan National High School, bested rivals from Compostela Valley and Digos City to clinch the secondary boys 110-meter hurdle gold.

Hopano, son of Jesus, a carpenter, and Ramona, a housewife, said: "I feel blessed because the training is worth it. Nagpasalamat ko kang Lord, sa mga support sa coaches, family and friends. Excited nako makaduwa sa nasyunal nga lahi na sab nga journey (I thank God, our coaches, family and friends for their support. I'm so excited to compete in the national as it will be another journey for me)."

Hopano, interviewed by Sun.Star Davao SuperBalita, also said he's all the more inspired to ready himself for the Palarong Pambansa.

"Mas mag-train gayud ko og maayo, super training gayud para maka gold ko sa Palaro (I'll train harder this time to also win a Palaro gold)," he said.

Sofia Bangonan, however, settled for silver in secondary girls discus throw while fellow Dabawenya Andrea de Guia copped the bronze in secondary girls 800-meter run.

Seigfred Butch Sumacbay of Catalunan Pequeño Elementary School also salvaged a bronze as he finished third in elementary boys triple jump event. He registered 9.55 meters while Edrian Payan of Davao del Sur (10.88m) annexed the gold and Lemuel John Flores of Tagum City (10.42m) took the bronze.

In table tennis, 12-year-old Corrine Cartera of Davao City kept her hopes alive as she topped bracket A in elementary girls singles event. This came on the heels of winning two more matches late Monday against players from the Island Garden City of Samal (3-0) and Davao del Sur (3-0).

Lindy Marie Darlo, for her part, also grabbed the first spot of bracket in secondary girls singles.
